Alzheimer’s Awareness Day to be held at Georgia’s Capital February 13

Over 300 Alzheimer’s advocates and supporters will descend upon Georgia’s Capital in Atlanta on Monday, February 13.  GA Alzheimer’s Awareness Day

End AlzheimersSome of the key issues on Alzheimer’s Awareness Day will be:

  • To maintain the $225,000 for Alzheimer’s respite services: This money provides critical support to caregivers, and gives the State an alternative to more costly long-term care.  In past years, the Governor proposed to cut this funding.  This year, he did not—but we want to ensure that as they deliberate the budget, neither the House nor the Senate propose cutting the funding.
  • For Support of the Physicians Order for Life Sustaining Treatment:   This legislation was passed in 2010.  The Department of Public Health is currently drafting the form and regulations.  Potentially, there may need to be legislation to protect medical providers who honor the form from civil or criminal liability.

Man Walking to End Alzheimer’s Stops in Savannah

By: TUQUYEN MACH | WSAV-TV
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) –

He has walked 17,000 miles through 16 states in an effort raise awareness and find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.

Will Bohnak lost his grandmother to Alzheimer’s and wanted to honor her memory, so he left Ohio in August to spread the word about the disease.

His trip, called “A Journey for the Memories”, brought him to Savannah this week. He hopes that bringing more attention to the disease will pave the way for a cure.

“Anyone can just get in the car and drive for Alzheimer’s and go to different areas and tell people what Alzheimer’s is. But we figured someone walking to these areas would have a little bit more of an impact,” said Bohnak.

He said he walks about 20 to 26 miles a day. He plans to make his way south along the Georgia coast into Florida over the next week.
